Tasty Bites - News from Citarella
Italy’s Best – For the Professional Gourmet, March 2000
As of late spring 2000, the people of Midtown Manhattan will have a Citarella to call their very own. To be housed in the Hurley building, located at the corner of 6th Avenue and 49th Street, the new Citarella restaurant will not be one to shrink away from the legacy Hurley’s “hold-out bar” left behind. Owner Joe Gurrera looks forward to incorporating the many wonderful ingredients he already offers at his two Uptown stores and transforming them into a menu worthy of the building’s history and the name Citarella, with plenty of seafood and prized aged beef as features. Not only will the cuisine be one to set a precedent, but the atmosphere, to be designed by prominent architect David Rockwell of the Rockwell Group, is sure to enthrall and inspire. The restaurant will encompass all four stories of the Hurley building: the first floor will house the bar (as the Hurley brothers would have wanted) and a 14-seat chef’s dining room next to the kitchen. The second and third floors will be the main dining area, with tables arranged in a circular pattern giving more patrons access to street-level views. The fourth floor will be reserved for private parties. Since Citarella’s would not be complete without a retail area, Citarella To Go will be located adjacent to the restaurant with its own entrance and menu on 6th Avenue.
